Should non-fungible tokens (NFTs) be considered works of art? A group of Wikipedia editors spoke on the subject. He took a stand against the idea that NFTs should be taken for works of art. As you might expect, this decision has created heated controversy on social media.
An endless discussion!
At the end of December, Wikipedia had launched a survey on its platform to collect the opinion of its users. The latter were invited to decide whether or not NFTs should be considered as works of art. In fact, the question was whether NFT art sales should be taken as “art sales” or if they should instead be considered “NFT sales”.
“Wikipedia really can’t decide what’s considered art or not, so putting art sales on their own list makes it a whole lot easier,” wrote an editor. The editors are very divided on this question and do not yet know which position to adopt.
Faced with this situation, a vote was organized in the group of editors. At the end of the vote, 5 editors were opposed to the inclusion of NFTs in sales of works of art and only one was in favor. Subsequently, last Wednesday, a consensus was reached to remove from the list of best sellers art from sales such as Pak’s ($91 million) and Beeple’s ($69 million) NFT collections.
The reactions of some players in the sector
The debate opened by Wikipedia has sparked heated controversy on social networks, especially on Twitter. For proponents of NFTs, the debate is meaningless. So thinks Nifty Gateway co-founder Griffin Cock Foster.
On Thursday, Mr. Foster wrote: “Wikipedia editors are trying to say that no NFT can be considered art, i.e. if it is an NFT, it cannot be classified as art”. Foster isn’t the only one to tweet about the debate. His twin brother, Duncan, said that this situation is a “artistic urgency”.
“Wikipedia operates on the basis of precedent. If NFTs are classified as ‘non-artistic’ on this page, then they will be classified as ‘non-artistic’ on the rest of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is the global source of truth for many people around the world. The stakes couldn’t be higher.” Mr. Duncan added.
According to Wikipedia editors, NFT works do not deserve to be classified as works of art. According to them, they do not meet the required criteria. The debate is of paramount importance, because Wikipedia is used by millions of people. If the site comes to the conclusion that the NFTs are not works of art, it could have an impact on the thinking of all these people.

Far from having dampened my enthusiasm, an unsuccessful investment in 2017 on a few cryptos only increased my enthusiasm. I therefore resolved to study and understand the blockchain and its many uses and to relay with my pen information relating to this ecosystem.
