According to two data providers, the pilot e-CNY digital wallet app, currently available in a dozen major Chinese cities, exceeded 16 million downloads in the first week after its launch.

Information from data provider Qimai indicates more than two million downloads from the Apple Store in mainland China, while another provider, Kuchuan, indicates more than 14 million Android downloads in the country.
On Monday, January 10, the e-CNY wallet app ranked second among Apple Store’s free apps in mainland China, and first in the store’s financial category.
The application for the digital yuan has been launched January 3. Previously it was only available through private channels provided by banks participating in e-CNY testing.
In November, China’s central bank said 140 million digital yuan wallets had been opened through these private channels.
The People’s Bank of China has been working on introducing the Chinese digital yuan for seven years. Digital currency is the most advanced currency issued by a major world power.
The digital yuan is expected to be officially launched during the Beijing Winter Olympics in February.
