Since last Sunday, Crypto.com has received a lot of criticism on social networks. The reason ? Internet users point to an advertisement that the platform has broadcast during football matches. In this ad, she distorts the view that we can have of cryptocurrencies.

    The content of the advertisement

Fortune favors the Brave (“Fortune favors the brave”). That’s the headline of the Crypto.com ad in which Matt Damon portrays cryptocurrency. The advertising has been around for a few months. In fact, she has been viewed on the platform’s official YouTube channel around 11 million times. However, it was only on Sundays that it caught everyone’s attention.

In the advertisement, we see the star of Good will hunting speak up about cryptocurrency. He argues that investors are like legendary explorers of the past and today’s adventurers. So far so good.

However, towards the end of the video, shortly before the Crypto.com logo appears, Damon gazes into what appears to be the planet Mars. It then gives the impression that viewers need to engage in cryptocurrency using the money they have, and they need to do it now!

” The story is full of almost Damon said in the ad. “With those who failed to venture, who failed to succeed. But in the end for them it turned out to be too much. And then there are the others. Those who embrace the moment and engage.“

“Attract people into an artificial asset class“

Rightly or wrongly, the message conveyed by the Crypto.com ad did not find favor with all viewers. On Twitter, many publications have criticized the substance.

“Now we have prime-time NFL commercials in which movie stars portray passive investments in a totally man-made asset class as the next frontier in human exploration, where your return depends on capacity. attract more investors to the systemSouthpaw joked, an expert.

Ken Klippenstein, an investigative journalist fromThe Interceptwho has nearly half a million subscribers wrote: “Damn Matt Damon ain’t got enough money“. What should we understand by this tweet? Ken sided with viewers who, after seeing the commercial, thought that asking ordinary people to swallow their money in capitalist schemes is pretty crass.

A Crypto.com ad featuring Matt Damon sparked a wave of criticism on the web. For many professionals, it creates the opposite of the effect the platform was looking for by shooting this short video. It reduces the confidence people might have in cryptocurrencies. It causes people who see the video to be wary of electronic currencies.
