The American press group; New York Times Company, plans to use blockchain to combat the use and spread of fake news.
First revealed in March, the News Provenance Project is being led by the New York Times R&D team to explore “ways to make the origins of journalistic content clearer for the general public ”.
Together with IBM Garage, they use Hyperledger Fabric to ensure the authenticity of digital files, such as press photographs.
The News Provenance Project is currently in its first phase which should last until the end of 2019. It aims to produce a PoC (Proof of Concept) on photojournalism, in order to demonstrate how this system could work on a large scale.
Storage and sharing of metadata on the blockchain
As part of the PoC, they create “a system for storing and sharing contextual metadata»In the media, whether through images or videos, relayed by press agencies.
The News Provenance Project wants to create a reliable distribution mechanism to combat manipulation and build user confidence in the media.
The project aims to make the platform available for publications of various sizes. The NYT will get back to us with project updates, which will result in a report at the end of the pilot.
