The long-awaited transition from Ethereum to the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) has been pushed back again and again. According to the latest reports, the date was finally set for August this year. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently attended ETH Shanghai’s Web 3.0 Developer Summit.
An expected delay
Contrary to what was said, the switch from ETH to the PoS mechanism will not happen in June. Rather, it will take place in next august. On the other hand, on June 8, the transition to PoS should be implemented on the testnet Ropsten from Ethereum. In any case, this is what Vitalik Buterin said.
Preston Van Loon, one of the main developers of the Ethereum network, also said at the Permissionless conference that the transition, called The Merge, should take place in August. if everything goes as planned. And Vitalik confirmed this idea, adding that since this is a major test that is much larger than all the tests carried out so far, the work involves good preparation.
However, the blockchain co-founder explained that the expected delays are still possible. “There is always a risk of problems, a risk of delay. And so, September is possible and October as well”.
The different steps to go through
During the conference, researcher Justin Drake – he is a specialist in the ETH blockchain – mentioned that the team is making sure the merger goes through. according to schedule, because it is at the top of the priority list. He also insisted that there is a “strong desire to make this happen before the August trouble bomb”.
The term “difficulty bomb” refers to the program that is encoded in the Ethereum blockchain. This program is intended for slow down the network and was created to encourage the move to PoS consensus. Concretely, it is a concept according to which, once the PoS system is deployed, the specialists of the mining will no longer be able to operate the blockchain with the PoW.
The merger is the first of Ethereum’s major updates. She comes after the London upgrade. After The Merge, Ethereum planned The Surge, The Verge, The Purge and finally The Splurge.
Ever since it was announced, Ethereum’s transition from PoW to PoS system keeps getting everyone’s attention. Initially expected for the month of June, it is finally postponed to August. But nothing is guaranteed yet, it could also take place in September or October, in the event of an unforeseen delay.
