The arrest of Dmitry Vasiliev, the former managing director of the Russian cryptocurrency exchange Wex, had been the subject of several media reports. Obviously, the soap opera about this powerful man has not yet had its epilogue. Indeed, while the legal proceedings against him are still ongoing in Poland, he returned to Russia.
Return to Russia for the former CEO of Wex
Wex has been one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world. Based in Russia, it had a very bright future, before it collapsed due to numerous complaints from its clients.
Dmitry Vasiliev was arrested by Polish police on August 11, 2020. While his arrest was only to last 40 days, it was extended to almost 4 months. During the period, very little information had circulated about him. But lately Mr Vasiliev has been making headlines again because he was “released” by the authorities.
In an interview he gave to Russian media RBC, he stated that he was released on December 7. He claims that since that day he has returned to Russia where he currently resides. His Polish lawyer explained that the Polish court had rejected his request for extradition to Kazakhstan.
Let’s go back to the date of arrest of the former CEO of Wex. Why had an arrest warrant been issued against him? Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza reports that this is due to the loss of money of a large number of its customers who are citizens of member states of the European Union, including Poland. In fact, $ 450 million disappeared from company accounts without explanation !
Wanted by several states
It was in September 2017 that the Wex cryptocurrency exchange was launched. For years she was seen as the successor to the BTC-e exchange, whose activity ceased after Alexander Vinnik, a senior official, was arrested in Greece on the basis of a warrant issued by the United States. According to US prosecutors, this computer scientist would have laundered up to 9 billion dollars!
As for Dmitry Vasiliev, he was first detained in Italy in 2019 at the request of Interpol in a criminal case. Then, in August of the same year, the former CEO was freed by the Italian authorities, although many other countries like Russia, China and Belarus have initiated criminal proceedings against him.
Dmitry Vasiliev, the former head of the Wex company which offered its cryptocurrency exchange services to its clients before passing away, has been released in Poland. He then returned to Russia where he is now. Will the Russian authorities also take legal action against him?
